The importance of visual media

Within today’s omnipresent and varied media landscape, where content is available at our fingertips and on multiple devices, the fight for consumer attention is more competitive than ever.

Bearing this in mind, it’s no surprise that visual content is king. It grabs our attention and interaction on visual posts always trumps those that are simple text. Appealing visual content is the key to an effective content marketing strategy. But why is it that we love visual content marketing so much?

Whether it’s an image or a video, people prefer consuming information in a visual form, which in turn leads to an increased engagement. Human beings are naturally drawn to visual content and, whatever form it comes in, it will most likely increase a post’s performance.

What types of visual content marketing are there?

There are multiple forms of visual content; here are some of the most prevalent and popular:

  • Images (photography, quotes, memes, screenshots, GIFs, etc)
  • Infographics
  • Videos
  • Presentations
  • Data graphs

All of these types of visual content can be very engaging and, when used in combination, will create a highly effective content marketing strategy. However, it is important to play to each platform’s strength, as different mediums require a different post.

For example a successful Facebook content strategy will be significantly different to Twitter, Instagram will be different to Pinterest, so on and so forth. As long as visual media is used appropriately for each medium and the target audience is also taken into consideration, you are well placed to execute a strong campaign.

Finally, just to illustrate the power and effectiveness of visual content marketing, here are a few supporting statistics:

  • 63% of social media is made up of images, and this number will only increase, particularly when video is taken into account
  • Facebook posts that include an image receive 2.3 times more engagement than those without one
  • Tweets with images receive 150% more retweets
  • Website users only read 28% of the site’s words, with skim reading becoming increasingly prevalent within the online age
  • 90% of the information sent to our brain is visual
  • Our brain responds 60,000 times faster to visual information than text

The evolving modern media landscape is a fascinating place, but it’s clear that content marketing is here to stay. So, make sure you keep your content visual.
